Man killed in bridge accident
A fatal accident on the Hancock Bridge caused U.S. 522 to be closed for about three hours on Saturday, June 9 at the height of the afternoon heat.
David Wayne McCumbee, 52, of Berkeley Springs was pronounced dead at the scene, due to injuries received when his 1988 Toyota Corolla collided head-on with a 2012 Freightliner truck tractor pulling a full-sized box trailer, according to Maryland State Police.
The accident took place just after 1 p.m. near the state line and the CSX Railroad access road on the bridge.
Police said McCumbee was heading north on U.S. 522 when his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and ran into a southbound tractor-trailer driven by Jeffery Edward Martin, 40, of Petersburg, Va.
Police believed alcohol was a contributing factor in the collision.
Martin was not injured in the accident.
Maryland State Police were assisted at the scene by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Hancock Police, West Virginia State Police, Morgan County Sheriff’s Department and Maryland State Highway Administration.
