Boys sweep season series with Frankfort
Berkeley Springs boys basketball team traveled to Ridgeley and won their fifth consecutive game on Tuesday, February 7, by defeating Frankfort for the second time this year, 53-38.
Richard Recio and Zach Wise combined for 11 first quarter points and the Indians bolted out to a 17-10 lead after the opening eight minutes.
Brady Spielman, who finished with a game-high 11 points, poured in nine of those points in the second quarter enabling the Indians to stretch their lead to 13, 32-19, at the half.
Berkeley Springs cooled off some after the intermission and Frankfort closed the gap to 41-31 heading into the final quarter of regulation.
"The third quarter was pretty disappointing," said Indian Coach Jeremy Horvat. “We were flat for some reason."
The Falcon momentum was short lived as the Berkeley Springs defense ramped up the pressure and limited their Mineral County foe to only two fourth quarter baskets. The offense did its part in the final eight minutes too, and the Tribe walked away with the 15 point win.
"Towards the end of the third quarter we turned the pressure up and it seemed to rattle them (Frankfort) a little," Horvat said. “We kept the pressure up at the beginning of the fourth quarter and we started to pull away. The kids did what they needed to do down the stretch and we came home with an important win."
Brady Spielman led a balanced offensive attack with 11 points. Michael Kearney added 10, Wise nine, Recio eight, Dylan Whipple seven, Kyle Appel six and Jared Spielman two.
Brad Heltzel led the Flacons with 10 points.
The win evened Berkeley Springs record at 9-9.
Brandon Malone poured in 16 points as the BSHS JV downed Frankfort 52-48. Jake Truax, Tyler Zinzow and Kyle Appel added 11, 10 and nine points respectively.
