WVU signs top 25 football class

Dana Holgerson's first recruiting class was a success, according to Scout.com. The recruiting service rated the 28-man WVU class as the 25th best in the nation.

The Mountaineers hit the south hard, signing 12 players from Florida and five from Texas. Four recruits hail from the state of Ohio, three are from Maryland, two come from New Jersey, while Pennsylvania and Minnesota provided one each.

The class is pretty well balanced between offense and defense. There were 14 players recruited for the offensive side of the ball, 13 for the defense and one kicker.

It should come as no surprise, given Holgerson's offensive philosophy, that the position group that signed the most prospects was wide receiver. West Virginia inked six wideouts, one quarterback, one tight end, four offensive linemen and two running backs on offense.

On the defensive side of the ball WVU replenished the secondary with four safeties and a pair of cornerbacks. They also signed seven players in the front seven; four defensive linemen and three linebackers.

Three recruits, garnered four-star ranking from the recruiting service, including linebacker Sam Lebbe from Hyatsville, Md., offensive lineman Tyler Orlosky from Lakewood, Ohio and wide receiver Deontay McManus from Baltimore.

Quarterback Ford Childress, the son of former NFL great Ray Childress, received a three-star rating, along with 16 other Mountaineer recruits. Childress, who is already enrolled in Morgantown, completed 184 of 292 passes his senior year in Texas for 3,171 yards and 41 touchdowns.
