Grapplers winless at Hedgesville Duals
The Berkeley Springs High School Wrestling Team had a tough debut last weekend at the Hedgesville Duals Tournament. The Indians went 0-5 on both Friday and Saturday and finished at the bottom of the standings with an overall record of 0-10.
The Indians, who were able to fill only seven of the 14 weight classes, were led by two-time defending state champion Tory Bennett (182). Bennett, currently on an 80-match winning streak dating back to his sophomore year, posted a perfect 10-0 record.
Kyle Shambaugh (195) also had a strong tournament, finishing 9-1. Shambaugh's only loss was a 7-5 decision to Fairmont Senior.
Josh Capps (145) was 6-4, both Billy Wilson (126) and Michael Via (138) went 5-5, CJ Capps (120) was 3-7, while Weaver ended with a record of 1-6.
"Tory and Kyle both wrestled well," said Berkeley Springs coach Darrell Bennett. “I thought Josh Capps and Billy Wilson also did a good job. Josh made a couple of mistakes, but had a pretty strong showing and Billy has really improved since this time a year ago. We have a lot of work to do, but I think the kids are working pretty hard. It is going to be difficult to have success as a team, especially in dual meets, simply because of numbers."
Millbrook, Vs. captured the team title, winning all 10 of their dual meet matches during the two-day event.
Berkeley Springs will host the Max Horz, Jr. Invitational this weekend, December 9 and 10. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Friday and continue again at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
