Berkeley Springs High School remains AA

Their was a collective sigh of relief in the hallways of Berkeley Springs High School when the new classifications were released by the West Virginia High School Secondary Schools Athletic Commission (WVSSAC) last week.
It was feared that Berkeley Springs would move from Class AA to Class AAA.
It was a close call, but Berkeley Springs remained in Class AA, barely.

Instead of being the smallest Class AAA school in West Virginia – which looked likely to some studying things over the past couple of months – Berkeley Springs will be the largest Class AA school in the state when the new classifications take place in the fall of 2012.

Berkeley Springs official enrollment is 777, compared to 782 for Point Pleasant, which will have the dubious distinction of being the smallest Class AAA school in the state.

Point Pleasant joins Shady Spring and Oak Hill as the three schools to move up from Class AA to Class AAA, while Nicholas County, East Fairmont, North Marion, Robert C. Byrd, Bridgeport and Fairmont Senior all drop from AAA to AA.

Five schools, Magnolia, Sherman, Tug Valley, Tyler Consolidated and Greenbrier West, moved from Class AA to Class A.

The news was welcome to those close to Berkeley Springs High School, including athletic director Chad Brinegar.

"This was really good news," Brinegar said of the reclassification. “Competing against schools with a similar enrollment gives us the opportunity to be more competitive. We were right below the cut line."
The new classifications will remain in effect through the 2015-16 school year.
