Walters finishes in top 20 at State Golf Tournament
Berkeley Springs High School senior Matt Walters had a good showing in the West Virginia Class AA State Golf Tournament held at Ogelbay Park in Wheeling last week.
Walters shot a final round 87 for a two-day total of 169, which Indian Coach Dale McCumbee said was among the top 20 places.
"We haven't been able to get the official results, but we are pretty sure Matt finished 16th," McCumbee said.
Walters, who was tied for seventh after an opening-round 82, started off hot on day two, birding two of the first five holes, but was unable to sustain the effort in the middle of the round.
"Matt had a great start on the final day," said McCumbee. “He was two under through the first five holes and then hit a rough stretch, before finishing strong. I thought he showed a lot of heart finishing the way he did."
Walters played the final four holes one-under-par.
"I am glad he was rewarded with a trip to the state tournament," said McCumbee. “He has really worked on his game and should be an inspiration to all of our young players. If they model the effort he put into his game, they have an opportunity to achieve some success too. The ball is really in their court, as they say."
Poca's George Hamrick was the Class AA low medalist. Hamrick's two day-total of 148 included a 2-under-par 69 in the final round.
Ritchie County won the team title, edging Poca 471-474.
