Lady Indians gaining confidence

Berkeley Springs High School Girls Soccer Team split a pair of road games last week, defeating Keyser 3-1 and losing a heartbreaker to Frankfort 2-1.

"Our girls really played well this week," said Berkeley Springs coach Rocky Riffle. “They are starting to come on; they are gaining confidence."

The Indians got first-half goals from Sarah Allman and Leah Kidwell to take a 2-0 halftime lead at Keyser. Kidwell sealed the victory with her second goal of the game after intermission and the Indians returned home with a 3-1 win. Allman was also credited with an assist.

The win was an important one for the Tribe as it guarantees a home game to begin the postseason.

"I thought we played a pretty complete game," Riffle said. “It is good to see all the hard work pay off."

The Indians had an opportunity to beat top-seeded Frankfort on Saturday, October 8 and nearly pulled off the upset, before losing 2-1.

In fact, Berkeley held a 1-0 lead, thanks to some strong defense and a goal by Allman, until the final 15 minutes of the game.

Frankfort's winning goal came on a controversial play, making the loss even more painful.

Despite the disappointing loss, Riffle came away from the game more confident than ever that his team can win the sectional title.

"Frankfort beat us 5-1 earlier in the year and a lot of people kind of wrote us off," said Riffle. “I've been telling you all along that we were going to be a dangerous team when the playoffs rolled around. We've made a couple of changes and seem to have found the right lineup that can compete with anyone in our section. Even though we lost, we know that we can play with them (Frankfort)."

The Indians will end the regular season at Hampshire County tomorrow, October 13, before beginning the postseason by hosting either Keyser or Petersburg in the opening game of sectional play on Monday, October 17. If both the Indians and Frankfort win their sectional openers, the sectional final will be played at Frankfort on October 19. The Indians will host the sectional final if they win their opening round game and Frankfort loses.
