Allegheny Power now called Potomac Edison
Electric customers may have noticed last month’s utility bills came from Potomac Edison rather than from the familiar Allegheny Power.
On February 25, Allegheny Power merged with FirstEnergy of Akron, Ohio.
FirstEnergy is a large energy company that owns Potomac Edison as well as nine other electric companies in Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey.
The Allegheny Power name is being phased out. Former Allegheny Power customers will receive bills and services under FirstEnergy’s utility company names, which include Potomac Edison, Mon Power and West Penn Power.
“FirstEnergy is reintroducing the Potomac Edison name in its service territory in the Eastern Panhandle and in western Maryland,” said Potomac Edison spokesman Mark Nitowski.
“We believe that switching back to Potomac Edison reinforces our commitment to maintaining an engaged local presence, which includes more support for education and community-based organizations,” he said.
“We expect customers to benefit from better rates over the long term than otherwise would have been available,” Nitowski also said.
