Golfers fourth in MartinsburgInvitational
Berkeley Springs young golf team, led by junior Ryan Redick fifth place finish, placed fourth at the Martinsburg Invitational on Wednesday, August 15 at Stonebridge Golf Course in Martinsburg.
Justin Stambaugh led Jefferson to the team title with the day's low round of 77. Jefferson's total of 331 was three shots better than Martinsbug's 334 total. Keyser finished third with 359, followed by Berkeley Springs 383, Musselman 387 and Hedgesville 416.
Nathan Bowers shot a 94 for the Tribe, Andrew Brock a 102, Zack Solomon and Justin Mang each carded a 104, while Kevin Close came in with a 115.
"We are making some progress," said Berkeley Springs coach Dale McCumbee. "Ryan had a nice round today which should be good for his confidence. Nathan and the younger kids are working hard and showing some improvement. I think we will only get better."
The day earlier the Indians finished second to Frankfort in a five-team nine-hole match at Valley View Golf Course in Moorefield. The Falcons scored 162 to Berkeley Springs 183. Petersburg was a close third with 183, followed by Moorefield with 194 and East Hardy with 205.
Travis Dennison of Frankfort won low medalist honors with a 36.
Redick led the Indians with a 41, Solomon fired a 45, Bowers a 47 and Brock a 50.
The Indians' next match is at the Musselman Invitational on Tuesday, August 28 at Locust Hills in Charles Town.
BSHS 2007 graduate, A.J. Blankenship won the Central Counties Junior Golf Championship on Monday, August 6, at Philipsburg Country Club in Philipsburg, Pa.
Blankenship shot a 72, edging Lee Elder (73) of Roaring Springs, Pa. Matt Baer of Mount Union, Pa. finished third with a 75, Jimmy Ferguson of Tyrone, Pa. and Brandon Metz of State College rounded out the top five with respective scores of 77 and 78.
