Girls Track Team wins quadrangular; Boys finish a close second

The Berkeley Springs High School girls and boys track teams traveled to Hancock, Md., on Thursday, April 5, for a quadrangular meet against Hancock, Southern Fulton, Pa. and Smithsburg, Md.

All teams battled cold, windy conditions. But even with the snow flying and wind howling the Berkeley Springs girls finished first with 123 points and the boys second, 1.5 points behind Smithsburg.

"The weather was horrible and the performances weren't the best because of that," Berkeley Springs coach David Mundey said. "It took a lot of guts for those kids to get out there and compete. You've got to give them a lot of credit."

Meghan Mock and Rachel Buser led the girls team to victory. Mock won four events including the 100 meter hurdles (16.9), 300 meter hurdles (52.2), high jump (4-8) and long jump (16-2). Buser's four victories came in the 800, 1660 and 3200 meter runs and the 4 x 400 meter relay. Her winning time in 800 was 2:38.9, 5:48.9 in the 1600, 12:09.9 in the 3200 and 4:47.4 in the relay. Buser was joined on the 4x400 team by Rebecca Trump, Corrie Riffle and Breanna Henry.

Jordan Reedy, Trump, Riffle and Mara Hutchinson joined forces to win both the 4x100 (58.1) and 4x200 (2:06.1) meter relays, while Katie Whittington placed first in the shot put with a throw 32 feet 2 inches.

Henry placed second in both the 800 and 3200 meter runs, Ardath Osborne was second

in the 1600 and Amber Booher finished second in the high jump.

Kari Mundey was third in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, Courtney Kesecker took third in the high jump, Maddy Parrill finished third in the shot put, Brittany Nail took third in the discus and Osborne placed third in the 800.

Lenny Roach led the boys team, winning all four events he entered. Roach won the 800 (2:14), 1600 (4:55.2) and 3200 (10:31.7) meter runs. Roach also ran a leg on the winning 4 x 800 meter relay team (9:57.2). Joining Roach on the 4x800 relay team were Eric Duckwall, John Mundey and Cody Riffle.

Both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay teams also captured first. The quartet of Cody Hess, Sam Byrne, Sammy Trump and Brian Ness won the 4x100 in a time of 46.7, while Hess, Byrne, Trump and Cody Reed ran 1:39.5 to win the 4x200. Byrne and Foster Sirbaugh had the other first place finishes in the shot put (42-2) and high jump (5-10), respectively.

Ness placed second in the high jump, long jump and 110 meter high hurdles, Sean Gibson was second in the 100, Duckwall was second in the 800, Bryne finished second in the discus, Paul Truitt placed second in both the 300 meter hurdles and 200 meter dash, while the 4x400 meter relay team of Reed, Devin Walsh, Duckwall and Brandon Costello also finished second.

Costello and Truitt each placed third in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, respectively.

"I was worried about incurring injuries in this cold weather, but it looks like like we made it through pretty healthy," said Mundey. "One really good thing about the meet was the opportunity to get a lot of the younger kids some experience."
