Walk Across Maryland kicks off health events
To kick off the 2007 Health Olympics, Hancock and Berkeley Springs' successful free community health promotion project, there will be a "Walk Across Maryland," Friday, March 30, at 12 noon, led by Dr. Matthew Hahn.
In an effort to call attention to the benefits of exercise, participants will attempt what many are calling an impossible feat: walking the entire state of Maryland in 30 minutes.
Dr. Hahn commented, "Amazing things can happen when you are fit and healthy. Most serious chronic diseases and many cancers can be prevented just by taking better care of your health. By achieving this incredible task, walking the entire state in just 30 minutes, we hope to call attention to the incredible benefits of regular exercise."
The 2007 Health Olympics will take place April through May. Sign-ups begin Monday, March 19, and continue through Friday, April 6. Participation in the Health Olympics is easy: just choose a weight loss goal up to 10 pounds and commit to exercising and eating healthier.
Participants are given a schedule that asks them to try and exercise at least 30 minutes per day; to cut 200 calories from their regular daily eating; and to avoid their worst health habit each day.
All participants receive a free Health Olympics tee shirt and are eligible for 10% discounts at many local fitness facilities.
Almost 1,000 people have participated in the Health Olympics, and results, for those who stick with it, are impressive, with an average weight loss of two pounds per month.
Sign up locations for the Health Olympics include Tri-State Community Health Center, Rankin Fitness Center, War Memorial Hospital and Curves locations in Berkeley Springs and Hancock.
Every Thursday evening throughout the Health Olympics, Dr. Hahn will host a "Walk with the Doctor," where participants can exercise and ask health-related questions. Each "Walk with the Doctor" will also feature guest appearances by local luminaries.
Opening events are planned for both Hancock and Berkeley Springs. Following the Walk Across Maryland, there will
be a health fair, from 1-5 p.m., at the Hancock Community Center, hosted by Tri-State Community Health Center. Then on Monday, April 2, Rankin Fitness Center will host an opening party. Participants can sign up for the Health Olympics at these events, as well.
