Junior Wrestling Qualify 15 for Mason Dixon League Championship
The Berkeley Springs Junior Wrestling Club traveled to North Hagerstown High School on Saturday, March 3 to compete in the annual Mason Dixon League Division A Qualifying Tournament. Teams competing at the tournament include Williamsport, Md., Greencastle, Pa., Tuscarora/Mercersburg, Pa., Willie Walters/Winchester, Va., Berkeley County and Hagerstown YMCA.
The tribe crowned six champions at the event including: Daniel Sherrard at Bantam 64 pounds, Steven Shade at Midget 85 pounds, Matthew Parkinson at Junior Unlimited, Damion Capper at Intermediate 119 pounds, Cody Gaither at Intermediate 147 pounds and Ricky Michael at Intermediate 152 pounds.
The Indians had three second place finishers at the event Tanner Clark at Bantam 72 pounds, Tory Bennett at Intermediate 140 pounds and Zack Risinger at Intermediate 126 pounds.
Four of the junior wrestlers battled back for third place at the tournament. Chason Day at Bantam 52 pounds, David Mundey at Bantam 56 pounds, Logan Zimmerman at Bantam 36 pounds and Trevor Jamison at Intermediate 84 pounds.
Berkeley Springs also had two fourth place finishers: Damien Mallory at Bantam 56 pounds and Kyle Hoffarth at Intermediate 105 pounds.
Wrestlers placing in the top four in the Division A qualifier will have the opportunity to compete in the Mason Dixon League Championship which was held on Saturday, March 10 at Greencastle, Pa. Results to follow next week.
The tribe also had three fifth place finishers at the tournament who may compete in the league championship in the event one of the top four place winners is unable to attend. Fifth place finishers are: Remington Hiles at Bantam 44 pounds, Denny Sommers at Bantam 72 pounds and Matt Marshall at Midget 85 pounds.
These year ending tournaments culminate what was a very successful season for the Berkeley Springs Junior Wrestling Club under new Head Coach David Mundey. The club had 40 members wrestling in four divisions from ages four through 15. The club competed in seven meets in the West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania recording 578 individual matches wrestled. The tribe took 257 wins against 321 losses during these matches for a win percentage of 44%. 62% of the wins came by pin.
Members of the Warm Springs Middle School wrestling team competing in the club made up a lions share of this year's success. These 12 wrestlers amassed 92 wins against only 25 losses recording a whopping win percentage of 78%.
Participants in the Berkeley Springs Wrestling Club this year who have not been mentioned previously included: Billy Creek, Matthew Davison, Tanner Day, Alex Faith, Brady Faith, Colby Farris, Dylan King, CJ Ryan, Tyler Sherrard, Peyton Stevens, Caleb Canady, Trevor Lineburg, Devon Mellott, Garrett Morris, Blake Smith, Dustin Gift, Dylan McCarty, Isaac Reed, Ryan Diehl, Cohen Hovermale and Loguen McKee.
