88th birthday celebration at Legion Post 60

American Legion Post 60 will hold their 88th birthday celebration on Sunday, March 18, 1 p.m.

Harold Plants will be the guest speaker for the celebration at the post home on 522 north.

Plants was born in Rayland, Ohio on February 26, 1935, the son of Archie W. Plants and Eva Ruth Rowan Plants.

He graduated from McKinley Vocational High School in Wheeling. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was stationed aboard the USS Walworth County (LSI1164).

Plants joined the American Legion at Sissel-Saxon Post No. 41 in Silver Spring, Md. He has 27 years of continuous membership. He transferred to Cacapon Bridge Post No. 137 in 1992. He has served as: Post Adjutant for over 11 years, Boys State Chairman, and Constitution & Bylaws Committee Chairman. He served 12 years as a Post Executive Committee member. He was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in 2002.

He was elected Tenth District Commander for 2004-2006.

Plants has served the Department as Vice Commander for 2002-2003, Membership Co-Chairman for 2001-2002 and Department Commission member from 2001-2004. He has also served as Boys State Counselor and Department SAL Advisor.

On the National level, he served on the Americanism Council 2003 and 2004 and has been a member of the Convention Legislative and Rules Committee since 2000. He was appointed National VA&R General Member-Region 2, from 2003 to 2008 and has represented the Department at the Washington Conference since 2004. He was appointed American Legion Deputy Representative for the Martinsburg VA Medical Center in 2003.

He retired in 1992 after 31 years with the Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory, in Laurel, Md. He was a Naval Combat Systems Engineer. He and his wife, the former Nancy Wood, have been married for 48 years and attend the Capon Bridge Christian Church. They have three children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
