Water Works fixes big leak

A large water leak was detected and fixed by the crew of the Water Department near the corner of Fairfax and Green streets on Wednesday morning, December 10.

We have been hunting for it for a couple of weeks, Chief Water Operator Terry Largent said.

The leak has been responsible for depleting two of the town's water towers located at War Memorial Hospital and on Meyers Street.

Mayor Susan Webster has placed public service announcements on the local radio station WDCH 92.9 twice in the last two weeks asking people in the affected area to conserve water.

Largent said the leak was found when Jim Close noticed several of the water meters in the area were flooded and saw water running into a drain.

After digging up the street the crew found the leak in a six inch water main and repaired it.

Largent said the level in the two water tanks was up 10 – 12 feet overnight and that it would take a couple of days before the tanks were at normal levels again.

Over the last month the crew has found and fixed over 30 water leaks, Largent said.
