Man charged with terroristic threats

A Morgan County man has been arrested on charges of making terroristic threats, reported Chief Deputy Wade Shambaugh.

Joe Lewis Butts, 18, of Berkeley Springs, was arrested on a felony warrant on January 16.

On Tuesday, January 15, Morgan County Deputy First Class Clifton Cobern responded to a complaint from a woman, that Butts was threathening to “shoot up” her home, her place of work and her children’s school. The complainant also showed Cobern a facebook post, allegedly made by the accused, mentioning these threats, according to police.

Acting on that information, DFC Cobern recorded a telephone call with the accused, during which the accused admitted to making these threats. He then filed a criminal complaint with Magistrate Court and received a felony warrant for the accused.

Shambaugh said the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office wants to send a clear message that any and all such threats will be taken seriously and anyone making such threats will be prosecuted.

Butts is currently being held in Eastern Regional Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
