Towpath celebration at Izaak Walton League

The Berkeley County Chapter Izaak Walton League will celebrate the completion (or near completion) of the one and one half mile reconstruction of the eroded break in the C&O Canal towpath.

This celebration will be held on Saturday, September 15 at the Izaak Walton League Chapter House, 288 Izaak Walton Road, Martinsburg, (rain or shine).

Weather permitting, they will meet at 1 p.m. at the pavilion, and after a brief introduction of the state and national directors, lunch will be served and pontoon boats will be available if anyone wishes to see the completed construction site from the river.

Years of flooding and erosion had caused the only break in the 184.5 mile long Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath, in an area of the Potomac River known as the Big Slackwater, creating an impassable situation for hikers and bikers using this trail.
