Indian Baseball Team bounces back

After opening the season with two losses, the Berkeley Springs High School baseball team rebounded with six wins against just one loss last week. They opened the week with a double header sweep of Frankfort on Monday, April 2 by respective scores of 8-6 and 10-2. The Indians then split a double with Hampshire County on Wednesday, winning the first game 9-8 and dropping the nightcap 9-7, before defeating Southern Fulton the following day 9-1. The week ended with a sweep of East Hardy on Saturday, April 7, winning the first game 11-1 and then receiving a forfeit in the second game.

"I think we're starting to come together as a team," said Berkeley Springs coach Trey Barcus. "We have our spring trip coming up this week and we want to carry this momentum throughout the trip."

Just Wow!

Two weeks ago I lamented how it was hard to write about WVU's run in the National Invitation Tournament because Mountaineers games were being played while the paper was being printed on Tuesday evenings. I did offer up the suggestion two weeks ago that West Virginia coach John Beilein would likely be contacted by Michigan about its vacant head basketball coaching position at the conclusion of the Mountaineers' run in the NIT.

After battling Mother Nature for much of March, the Berkeley Springs High School tennis teams got their season started on Tuesday, March 20, at Petersburg. The boys fell 4-3 to the Vikings, while Petersburg's girls team downed the Indians 7-0.

Eric Lyda, the number one singles player for Berkeley Springs, defeated Dylan Riggleman 8-5, the same score that the number two player Denny Golden beat Petersburg's number two player Moe Foley by. Ironically, Golden and Lyda, the number one doubles team, beat Riggleman and Foley by the same score, 8-5.

Berkeley Springs Softball Team off to slow start

After the first week of the high school softball season, Berkeley Springs stands 1-3 on the year. The Indians dropped a pair of games to Martinsburg and the other to Jefferson County. The lone win came over the weekend with Berkeley Springs pulling out a hard earned 7-6 victory over Moorefield, at the Gene Baker Tournament in Martinsburg.

Girls track team second, boys fourth at Jim Taylor Relays

Berkeley Springs High School opened its track and field season on Saturday, March 24, at the 13-team Jim Taylor Relays held in Shenandoah Junction. The girls team placed second, while the boys team finished fourth.

It was an opportunity for the athletes to taste competition and for the coaches to start putting pieces of the puzzle together.

BSHS baseball and softball team openers delayed

Mother Nature dumped several inches of snow on Friday, March 16. The late snow, coupled with below average temperatures kept the baseball and softball diamonds throughout the Tri-State region covered for several days.

Eventually the snow melted and we had a couple of warm, sunny days that allowed officials to prepare the diamonds for play. But, once again the weather failed to cooperate, as rain on both Friday and Saturday, of last week, prevented Berkeley Springs High School's softball and baseball teams from opening their respective seasons.

Here we go again

The problem with the National Invitational Tournament and preparing this column is timing. Three of the four games West Virginia has played in the tournament thus far have been played on Tuesday night while the paper was being printed. That includes last night's semi final against Mississippi State in Madison Square Garden.
