School calendar highlights

Thursday, August 21 - Back-to-School Nights

•Berkeley Springs High freshmen 6-8 p.m.

Morgan County Adult Basic Education classes

Registration for Adult Basic Education classes will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 6 p.m. at the Career Technology Building, Berkeley Springs High School. The evening will include an orientation and placement testing for new students. To pre-register, call 258-2430 extension 20.

Regular classes will be held on Monday and Wednesday beginning Monday, September 8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. There is no charge for class, but regular attendance is expected. Classes observe Morgan County Schools schedule and will be closed accordingly.

Intermediate School raises $1,869.96

Students at Warm Springs Intermediate School raised $1,869.96 to help find cures for cancer and provide help and hope to thousands of patients and their families, through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients program.

The Morgan County school board approved three contracts related to the operation of pre-Kindergarten programs for the 2008-2009 school year.

School staff retires with many years of service



In addition to three classroom teachers, the Morgan County school system is saying farewell to several other long-time employees.

Community Foundation announces 2008 scholarship awards

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation announced scholarship awards for 28 local students from the Eastern Panhandle totaling $35,500.

President Stew Borger announced the awards at a recent reception bringing together donors and scholarship recipients together. Its very rewarding to meet a student who is on the brink of a whole new future because of a little help from a fund you created.

BSHS Senior Awards Program

Berkeley Springs High School held its annual Senior Awards Programs on Wednesday, May 21, at 9 a.m. in the Connie Perry Community Auditorium. Lance Fox, assistant principal, emceed the event. Representatives from 41 different scholarship programs, clubs, and organizations were in attendance to honor the graduates. Thousands of dollars were given to students to help futher their education.

Governor

The Governor's Schools selection committee released the names of students chosen to attend the 2008 Governor's School for Math and Science, scheduled for this summer. More than 135 middle school students representing all 55 counties in West Virginia will be attending the School for Math and Science.

What do you do with a fourth grader who already knows the names of every human body part, and has authored a National Anthem of the Body?

Valedictorian and salutatorians at Paw Paw High School

The salutatorians are Caitlin Shambaugh and Daniel Oliver. Shambaugh is the daughter of Wade and Kathleen Shambaugh of Paw Paw. She has maintained a 3.69 grade point average throughout her high school education. Her honors have included National Honor Society, Senior Class President, Scholar Athlete and Paw Paw High School Honor Roll. Her activities include band, cheerleading, newspaper and yearbook.

Oliver is the son of Dana and Brenda Oliver of Great Cacapon. He has maintained a 3.7 grade point average throughout his high school education. His honors have included National Honor Society, Student Council Representative, Paw Paw High School Honor Roll, Scholar Athlete, Offensive and Pitching Baseball MVP, Regional Math Field Day, Placing First in State Art Contest, and Highest Batting Average Leader in the area. His activities include baseball, student council, and being a technology intern at Paw Paw High School.
