Parents can register pre-K tots

Next week, parents of Morgan County's youngest scholars can register their children for next year's pre-Kindergarten classes.

All children who will be four years old by September 1 are eligible to register for pre-K classes on Tuesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 4 at a variety of locations.

Social Studies Fair at Intermediate School

Warm Springs Intermediate School held a Social Studies Fair on Tuesday, February 18. Each exhibit was unique and each student answered questions from the judges about their learning.

First and second place winners can advance to the county level competition.

The Hedgesville High School Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the Outstanding Alumni Award. This award will be presented at the annual banquet held at Hedgesville High School on Saturday, May 30.

Outstanding Alumni nominees must be: A graduate of Hedgesville High School, be outstanding in their field of work, be outstanding in their community service/work and be outstanding in their personal achievement.

PASS training for volunteers

The PASS Program (Providing Academic and Self-Esteem Support) will be conducting a training for new volunteers on Monday, March 9, at Widmyer Elementary School in Berkeley Springs.

This is a mentor program sponsored by Morgan County Schools. Volunteers are needed at all schools in Morgan County and at all grade levels from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Jason Fipps of Berkeley Springs, was named to Mountain State University Culinary School Dean's List for the fall 2008 semester with a 4.0 grade point average. Fipps worked at Lot 12 before going to school.

Free programs offered at James Rumsey

The Jill S. Weekley Learning Center at the James Rumsey Technical Institute offers a variety of free programs to students 16 years of age and older who are out of the public school system.

All classes and programs are completely free of charge and are available during both day and evening hours.

Program helps kids learn about money

These are tough times. One additional element may be our inability to manage money, or more accurately, debt. We're swimming in it. Credit card debt. Mortgages we can't afford. Local students learning real-life economics

It's a remarkable year to be learning the basic principles of economics. Many adults are getting a short-course in it, while local high school students are studying the subject in earnest.

Berkeley Springs High School juniors and seniors in Ron Bittinger's Economics class are getting a close-up view of rising costs, market shifts and consumer spending habits as they collectively run a company they created last fall.
