Scholarships and awards to Paw Paw graduates

Paw Paw High School's 104th commencement ceremony was held May 22 at 7 p.m. on the front lawn of the school with 18 students graduating and one honorary graduate.

Cindy Lease, secretary of Paw Paw Schools, played the prelude, processional, and recessional on the piano. Ashley Riggleman welcomed guests and Principal Michelle Fleming introduced the featured speaker, former Paw Paw graduate Michael Bullett. Guidance Counselor Sabra Maguire presented the awards and scholarships and Julie Kidwell presented a slide show of the graduates.

American Legion Auxiliary gives awards to seniors

The Alderton-Dawson American legion Auxiliary, Unit 60, met at the Legion Post home May 11 with President Debbie Fox presiding.

Poppy Chariman, Erica Dods, gave an update on Poppy Day, May 16. Barbara Spitzer, Children and Youth Chairman, gave a report on the Special Olympics Summer Track and Field Games which were held on May 8 at Rankin Fitness Centers, Inc. Traci Snidemiller and Amanda Schildt from Berkeley Springs participated in these games. Snidemiller won a silver medal for her performance in the walking, basketball hoop toss and length of stride categories. Schildt won a silver medal for her performance in basketball hoop toss, walking and standing broad jump categories.

MacBeth is Marymount Univ. grad

Marymount University announces that Kellen MacBeth, a Politics major and a resident of Berkeley Springs, is among 450 graduates who received bachelor's degrees at the University's 58th Commencement Ceremonies at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., on May 10.

Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of Washington Week and senior correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS, gave the undergraduate address.

School board chooses new member



The Morgan County School Board will hold a special meeting this evening at 7 p.m. to choose their new school board member. The board interviewed three candidates in closed executive session at their Tuesday, May 19 meeting, but did not make a selection that evening.

Boone and Weber to attend Rhododendron Girls State

Alderton-Dawson American Legion Auxiliary Unit #60 announces that Carrie Boone and Renee Weber will be attending Rhododendron Girls State June 14-19 at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling.

Boone is the daughter of Bernard and Karen Burns. Her school activities include both marching and concert band, tennis, Rachel's Challenge and homecoming and prom committees. She participates in Adopt-A-Highway programs and other interests include church youth group and hanging out with friends. She plans to attend Marshall University to study medicine.

Most high school seniors will pursue further education



Some 81% of Berkeley Springs High School seniors have intentions of pursuing post-secondary education, said school counselor Candice Pennington at the May 19 school board meeting.

Berkeley Springs Lions Club honor BSHS

Berkeley Springs Lions Club honored the "Top-11 Seniors" of 2009 from Berkeley Springs High School with dinner at the Lions Club meeting on May 12, at The Country Inn. The students were accompanied by Candice Pennington, Senior High School Counselor, who provided information as to the activities of the senior class and specifically the "Top 11 Seniors."

Lions Club President Gary Van Horn provided a brief history of the Lions Clubs International and encouraged the students to include community service through various service clubs available to them as they continue their education and careers.
