Billboard ban extended until August 31

At their June 1 meeting, the Morgan County Commission unanimously voted to extend its ban on new off-premise billboards along the Washington Heritage Trail for three months. The ban will be in effect from June 1 until August 31.

The county's previous six-month ban on billboards along the trail expired May 31. The original six month ban on new off-premise billboards was enacted in May, 2006 and was extended in November, 2006.

Paw Paw hopes to build a rec center for youth

The Town of Paw Paw is planning to build a community wellness and recreation center for youth and adult activities. Plans are in the preliminary stages.

The building will include a multi-purpose room that could be used as both a gymnasium and social room, an exercise room, meeting rooms, a kitchen and restrooms, said Paw Paw Mayor Julie Kidwell. They may start with the gymnasium and locker rooms and build on to it, she said.

Town considers options for municipal building

At the June 1 Morgan County Commission meeting, the Town of Bath again expressed interest in having office space in the new Morgan County Courthouse. They also indicated that they were looking at other options.

Voters to choose mayor & council

Town of Paw Paw voters will choose a new mayor, recorder and council in the Paw Paw Municipal Election on Tuesday, June 5.

Vying for the mayor's post in the nonpartisan election are Kenneth Crites and Eldridge Kerns, a former mayor and council member.

Adviser charged in fraud cases

A financial adviser who has done business in Morgan County was arrested on multiple counts of fraud in Hampshire County last week.

Michael Linn Hofe, 49, of Winchester, Va. was charged with 16 felony counts of obtaining money by false pretenses and was taken to the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail on May 20, according to court information.

Bath Council holds second meeting on police issues

Bath Town Council members met on Wednesday, May 23, to follow up on an earlier meeting at which business owners discussed concerns about parking and police policies.

At the earlier meeting on May 16, more than 50 business owners and citizens crowded into council chambers to voice opinions.

At their May 4 meeting, the Morgan County Commission approved a bid from F & S Contracting, LLP for $32,108 for the Paw Paw E-911 tower site.

Morgan County Services Director Dave Michael said that the lowest project bid of $26,700 from Clinton Reed Excavating and Hauling did not include two 18-foot wide gates but proposed one 20-foot gate. A bid of $32,715 from Cowgill Excavating and Hauling did not include any gate specifications.

Write-in challenges incumbent mayor

Barb Campbell announced last week that she is a write-in candidate for mayor in the Town of Bath's election coming up on Tuesday, June 12.

Campbell has been active with community beautification projects and is on the town's Tree Committee.

Water super charged in drug deal on town property

The Town of Bath's water superintendent was arrested and charged with delivery of a controlled substance, a felony, at midday on Monday, May 21.

Kevin R. Hancock, 44, of McCumbee Lane, Berkeley Springs, was arrested after Morgan County Sheriff's deputies chased him in a town vehicle through downtown Berkeley Springs.
