Byrd brings services close to home

U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd has announced that members of his staff will hold mobile office hours for West Virginians with federally related problems or questions.

They will be in Morgan County Friday, June 29, 10:30 - noon at the Senior Center, 187 South Green Street, Berkeley Springs.

Memorial to be dedicated on Veterans Day

After a quarter of a century, the dream of seven members of the Morgan County World War II Memorial Association, and of other local WWII veterans, is about to become a reality.

The long awaited World War II Memorial will be erected on the east end of the Fairfax Street green.

Town

The West Virginia University Community Design Team has provided copies of their report as a first step in the Streetscape project for the Town of Bath. The project's aim is to improve the appearance and walk-ability of the town.

"The team was invited to come to our community to help guide and plan for various efforts which would grow out of a Federal Transportation grant awarded to the Town of Bath for streetscape improvements," said Garnet Marsh, town recorder and chair person of the Streetscape Committee.

Paw Paw Festival is set for September 14-16

The Town of Paw Paw will hold a new Paw Paw Festival the weekend of September 14-16. The festival will be held in the Paw Paw Park and fields and the Paw Paw School fields area, said Mayor Julie Kidwell.

Activities will include an area fireman's parade and competition, a carnival, bingo, a regional beauty pageant for children and teens, entertainment, a fiddle competition, Sunday bluegrass gospel music, food, crafts and Saturday fireworks.

Paw Paw Civil War Encampment

A Civil War Living History Encampment jointly sponsored by the Town of Paw Paw and Avalon Resort was held in the Paw Paw town park on May 19. At the encampment, visitors learned about the way the Union and Confederate soldiers lived, their hopes and dreams, their loves and hardships, and the way they fought.

With the crack of rifles in the air and the booming orders of Union Officers, the participants reminded that West Virginia cast its lot with the Union and became inextricably linked with the bloodiest war in American history. The Civil War Living History Encampment consisted of men in uniform, pitched tents, music and the sound of horses' hooves.

Audubon Society Picnic

Families and individuals from the Morgan County area who are interested in nature and conservation are welcome to attend a Potomac Valley Audubon Society (PVAS) picnic supper at Cacapon State Park on Sunday, June 24.

The picnic will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Gazebo picnic shelter, which is located in the middle of the park's picnic area.
