The identity of the person killed in the Monday, September 10 fire at 196 Youngblood Road south of Great Cacapon hasn't been confirmed.

The ruling as to the identity of the victim found at the fire scene will be coming from the State Medical Examiner's Office, said Assistant Fire Marshal Ed Robinson. Family members provided a hair sample for DNA assessment. Robinson didn't know when the DNA results would be available.

Streetscape Committee receives letter to proceed

A letter from Paul A. Mattox, Jr., West Virginia State Secretary of Transportation and Commissioner of Highways, has been received by the Bath Streetscape Committee allowing the committee to proceed with their plans in regard to the $200,000 Transportation Enhancement Program grant.

The committee plans include installing sidewalks, curbs, gutters and lighting along Wilkes Street between Fairfax Street and Route 9 west and on Independence and Congress Streets between Wilkes and Washington streets.

Paw Paw mayor asks for chief

Brian Sites has been relieved of his duties as Paw Paw's police chief, said Town Councilman Jeff Palmer, a former Paw Paw mayor.

Palmer wasn't sure of the exact date of Sites' last day as police chief, but it was more than a week ago.

Planning board looking at ordinance changes

The next meeting of the Morgan County Planning Commission on Tuesday, September 25, includes more than routine business on its agenda.

"We began working on changes to the subdivision ordinance at the last meeting," said Planning Commission President Jack Soronen. "I expect this effort to take about six months, which includes time for public meetings once draft documents are ready." Soronen said that updating and changing the ordinance, which outlines technical rules to be applied in land development, is an ongoing process."

Governor takes first shots at Cacapon trap shooting range

Governor Joe Manchin wasted little time christening the new wobble trap shooting range on Mountain Road in Cacapon State Park. Manchin loaded a shotgun provided by the park for the occasion with a 12 gauge shell, took aim, yelled "Pull!" and as the clay target was swiftly flying Frisbee-like through the air, managed to blast it to smithereens with his first shot.

"This is something I enjoy!" Manchin said.

Passersby called in the fire to the 911 center at 5:11 a.m., said Lieutenant Mike Kidwell of the Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company. The fire call was dispatched at 5:15 a.m. Firefighters got to the scene at 5:26 a.m., said Kidwell.

Grand jury indicts 45 people Charges include murder, sex crimes, fraud, drug sales

Two suspected murderers and other individuals accused of attempted murder, sexually assaulting children and embezzlement were among 45 people indicted by the Morgan County Grand Jury on September 4-5.

The indicted persons are to be arraigned before Circuit Judge Gina Groh on Monday, September 17, in Morgan County Circuit Court. At that time they will enter pleas and trial dates and bonds will be set.

Paw Paw council hears complaints from group

Calls for resignations and concerns about underage drinking, ATV noise and the legality of a trailer owned by a town official were voiced at the September 4 meeting of the Paw Paw Town Council.

Raising these and other issues were Sandy Zell, Genny Miller and Kenneth Kerns, all of whom live near Paw Paw but outside the town limits.
