Scrap Brothers finds new use for old building

"The future is in recycling," Ken Hogan told the local officials and citizens who gathered on January 25 for the grand opening of Scrap Brothers, Inc. in the former Consolidated Orchards building in Paw Paw.

Scrap Brothers is a recycling business that collects, buys, sorts and resells aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, glass, paper, some auto parts and just about any other recyclable. There's even a section of salvaged building materials available for sale to the public.

Long-Quirk wedding

Anne Marie Quirk and Scott William Long were united in marriage Saturday, September 30, 2006 at Gravel Hill United Methodist Church in Palmyra, Pa. The Reverend Douglas Smith performed the double ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Paul and Pat Quirk of Berkeley Springs. The groom is the son of Larry Long and Susan Kelly-Hess of Palmyra, Pa.

Cline graduates basic training

Army Pvt. Jonathan L. Cline graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Corner Steak and Sea opens in Berkeley Springs

The Corner Steak and Sea opened in Berkeley Springs in October and features steak, seafood, poultry and pasta entrees for lunch and dinner.

The Corner Steak and Sea is located at 174 North Washington Street in the former Inspirations Caf

Mountaineer Community Health Center hours

Mountaineer Community Health Center, located in Paw Paw, announces that during the months of February and March the office will be open on Wednesday evenings for appointments until 7 p.m. instead of the regular scheduled Thursday evening hours.

The hours of operation for the months of February and March will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the clinic will be open on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Foxglove Garden Club meets

The January Meeting of the Foxglove Garden Club was held at St. Mark's Church on January 9.

Members took covered dishes and the hostesses, Janice Bright, Joan Holderer, and Sallie Bailey, took desserts and breads and provided the beverages and decorations.

Wakelin

John and Kelly Wakelin of Berkeley Springs announce the birth of their fourth child, Alexander Nicholas Wakelin on January 2, weighing 7 lbs. 7 ozs. Their other children are John David Wakelin II, Victoria Marie, and Isabel Anne. Paternal grandparents are John David and Janis Scott Wakelin of Poway, Calif. Paternal great grandmother is Jean Scott of Poway. Maternal grandparents are Michael and Sandra Mooney of Fenwick Island, Del. and Rick and Paulette Aboe of Martinsburg. Maternal great grandmothers are Bette Blood of Fredericksburg, Va. and Anna Aboe of Warrenton, Va.

Keefer-Ridgeway wedding

Gary Leslie Keefer and Beth Ann Ridgeway were united in marriage on Friday, November 24, 2006 at the Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church. Rev. John Barlow officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Rick and Dora Ridgeway of Berkeley Springs and the groom is the son of Gary and Kim Keefer of Berkeley Springs. She is the grandaughter of Quentin and Ada Golden of Warfordsburg, Pa. and Richard and Oleta Ridgeway of Great Cacapon, W.Va. He is the grandson of Valie Schetrompf of Hancock and the late Leslie Schetrompf and Gary and Nancy Keefer of Hancock.

Daffodil Days fundraiser starts this month

For over 30 years, the American Cancer Society has sold daffodils to raise funds for research projects and outreach programs nationwide. The daffodil is the first flower of spring, a symbol of hope, renewal, and, for the Cancer Society, the promise that one day the world will be free of cancer.

The society is the nation's largest private, not-for-profit source of funds for scientists studying cancer. In West Virginia, one of the current grants funds ovarian cancer research at the West Virginia University Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology.

Wayside Market has new name, new managementf

Judy Gray and Vera Walls opened Gray Walls Market in December at the former Wayside Market on Valley Road, north of Cacapon State Park.

Walls and Gray previously worked as manager and assistant manager at the ROCS Shell Station, just south of Berkeley Springs.
