Commissioners travel to D.C. for courthouse funding help

Morgan County Commissioners Glen Stotler, Tommy Swaim and Brenda Hutchinson and County Administrator Bill Clark traveled to Washington D.C. last Thursday. They were seeking funding help for rebuilding the Morgan County Courthouse.

The group visited the offices of Senator Robert Byrd and U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito and spoke with staff. County resident John Petersen met them at Byrd's office.

Paw Paw enacts ATV ordinance

The Paw Paw Town Council adopted an ATV ordinance at their Tuesday, September 4 meeting.

The Paw Paw ATV ordinance bans the operation of an all-terrain vehicle on any public road or highway within the Town of Paw Paw, whether or not the road contains a center line.

Bridge work will last three months

Work on the Packing Shed Road bridge off Winchester Grade Road in southern Morgan County will last about three months.

The bridge, which is located on Route 8/18, has been a low water crossing that flooded all the time, said district bridge engineer Gary Klavuhn. It is also known as the Packing Horse Road bridge. There are a number of area structures built to handle low water conditions, he said.

Governor takes first shots at Cacapon trap shooting range

An early Monday morning house fire at 196 Youngblood Road south of Great Cacapon had one fatality.

Passersby called in the fire to the 911 center at 5:11 a.m., said Lieutenant Mike Kidwell of the Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company. The fire call was dispatched at 5:15 a.m. Firefighters got to the scene at 5:26 a.m., said Kidwell.

Paw Paw council hears complaints from group

Calls for resignations and concerns about underage drinking, ATV noise and the legality of a trailer owned by a town official were voiced at the September 4 meeting of the Paw Paw Town Council.

Raising these and other issues were Sandy Zell, Genny Miller and Kenneth Kerns, all of whom live near Paw Paw but outside the town limits.

Board appointment process approved

The Morgan County Commission approved a final draft of procedures for county volunteer board appointments and re-appointments at their September 7 meeting.

Commissioner Brenda Hutchinson made the motion for approval and Commissioner Glen Stotler seconded it. Commissioner Tommy Swaim was out of town.

The Boys & Girls Club keeps growing

The Morgan County unit of the Boys & Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle just keeps growing.

Some 105 children and 35 teen volunteers attended the 10-week summer program, said Boys & Girls Club unit director Chris Risinger at the August 24 Morgan County Commission meeting.

Remembering the days of the StarVue Drive-in

Blankets, pillows, coolers and toys for restless tots were all part of watching movies at the drive-in on a warm summer night.

New billboards will be banned on Washington Heritage Trail



New billboards over 32 square feet in size will be banned along the entire length of the Washington Heritage Trail in Morgan County.
