Glover wins

The 109th U.S. Open is in the books and it was won by a bookworm. Relatively unknown Lucas Glover, who says he reads up to six books a week, fought off late charges by Phil Mickelson and David Duval to claim the U.S. Open title at the Bethpage Black golf course on Long Island. While the marquee names in the field did not claim the championship, some made an impact on the final day. A final day which was pushed back until Monday due to persistent heavy rain in the New York area.

It's Open time

The U.S. Open begins this Thursday at the Bethpage Black Golf Course on Long Island and Tiger Woods' defense of his title will not be the only reason to watch. There will also be Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia on hand to amp up the interest. Of course there could be any number of compelling story lines develop during the 109th edition of the U.S. Open Golf Championship, but these three names provide plenty of interest for starters.

GITHG

I have an idea for a tee shirt. On the shirt will be a drawing of some goofy looking guy with a text balloon showing the guy yelling, "Get in the hole!" Stamped on top of that illustration will be a big red X.

It's Marshall time!

Remember when West Virginia governor Joe Manchin locked the athletic directors from West Virginia University and Marshall University in a room and wouldn't let them out until they agreed to play football against each other?

What was he thinking?

As far as watching golf on television is concerned, The Players Championship at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass is my second favorite golf event. First choice is the Masters. The other three major championships are very compelling as well, but the Players Championship edges out the U.S. Open for my second spot.

Brown's turn

Now that Pat White is off to the National Football League, what happens to West Virginia University's football team, especially at quarterback?

White to Miami

In the last week to 10 days, leading up to last weekend's National Football League draft, former West Virginia University quarterback Pat White became a hot topic.

Rising Star?

West Virginia University Basketball Coach Bog Huggins is known as a great recruiter of talent. Now that he has returned to his alma mater, there is no indication that his recruiting ability has fallen off.

Memorable after all

As usual, the 2009 Masters provided plenty of drama. Depending on your perspective, this edition of golf's premiere event turned into a sad story. Kenny Perry, the 48 year old journeyman, held a two shot lead with two holes to go. Two bogeys later and Perry found himself in a three way playoff with Chad Campbell and Angel Cabrera. Cabrera won on the second playoff hole when Perry made another bogey.

Huggins the X man?

At first I was startled, but then I figured it should have been expected. That would be the news/rumor I found on the internet Monday afternoon indicating that West Virginia University Basketball Coach, Bob Huggins, and the Xavier coach had mutual interest in the recently vacated head coaching position at the Cincinnati school.
