Bad day to be a Mountaineer

Gee whiz, Roy

How often have you been to an athletic event and seen some fan escorted from their seat by security or the police for some indiscretion? Anyone who has been to more than a few sports events have seen this. Usually the person is obviously inebriated, agitated and animated. The best place for that person is outside the arena.

Gator Bowl bound

I'll admit, I was a little concerned for those Mountaineer fans who were flocking to the Gator Bowl website and Ticketmaster last week buying tickets for the Gator Bowl. I could just see them getting left holding the bag if the Gator Bowl decided not to invite the Mountaineers. Yeah, the bowl's chairman, Rick Catlett, made it sound like the bowl wanted to invite West Virginia to play Florida State. They viewed the opportunity to have Bobby Bowden coaching in his final home game against his former team as a huge draw. Catlett sounded convincing enough, but knowing the disdain he and his bowl has for the Big East, I wasn't sure I wanted to buy what he was selling.

Great weekend to be a Mountaineer

I believe it was West Virginia University play-by-play announcer Tony Caridi who coined the phrase, "It's a great day to be a Mountaineer, wherever you may be." That was certainly the case last weekend for West Virginia fans as it was truly a great weekend to be a Mountaineer fan. Too bad Tiger Woods isn't a Mountaineer fan. More on that later.

Talking turkey

West Virginia University athletics fans will have plenty of chances this holiday weekend to watch the Mountaineers play on TV. Most of you probably know the Backyard Brawl with Pitt will be broadcast on ESPN2 from Morgantown Friday night at 7 p.m. Not quite as well publicized, and even harder to decipher, is the TV schedule for the 76 Classic in Anaheim, California where the Mountaineer basketball team will be this weekend.
